QUICK BURST OF SNOW FOR SOME....
I just got back from Madison and while this is late it is better than nothing, which is what I'm seeing on a lot of forecasts. Rain is quickly transitioning to snow over parts of my area and a quick 1-3" will be possible by early evening. As I mentioned yesterday, it seems the heaviest axis will roughly be along and 30 miles either side of a line from SW of Cedar Rapids to Dubuque and NE of Madison. This is what the EURO shows for total snowfall before it ends this evening. T

NEW YEARS EVE SLOP....
It's never cut and dry with winter systems. It takes a lot to get the ingredients for snow to fall... and it gets messy when you get anything else in the winter. Once again we're going to be dealing with a wintry mix through the day Monday. Here's a look at the system from our short term model, the HRRR: The timing of the precipitation and the temperatures at the surface will be critical and determining exactly what will transpire. There is a concern for freezing rain during

SKATING ON THIN ICE....
Greetings to all of you from Madison, Wisconsin. The family and I are spending the weekend at the Edgewater Resort. WINTER MAKES A COMEBACK...
I don't need to tell you that winter's come back. But let's talk about where we've been. The entire Midwest was above normal for much of December. Cedar Rapids is checking in around six degrees ABOVE normal for the whole month, so far. Cedar Rapids also ended up with five 50 degree days - two more than what we had in the whole month of December! And, as a result of all the mild air, there has been little snow (prior to last week's blizzard). Much of the Midwest is running beh

A WINTRY START TO 2019...
After getting off to a blazing start in November, we haven't seen much of winter the past 4 weeks. The primary reason is the split flow that's been evident in the polar and sub-tropical jets. Without significant phasing (coupling) cold air intrusions have been limited and brief in nature when they occur. In the short term, it does look like the two jets will try and co-exist as they attempt some degree of phasing this weekend. Below you can see the two distinct streams separa
