AN 86 DEGREE WARM-UP, GIMME A BREAK !
We all know the saying, if you don't like the weather just wait a day. Well, in this case you might have to wait a few but if modeling is correct temperatures could be 86 degrees warmer by next Monday. Say what? Yea, that's what the GFS and EURO are both showing. In the example above the GFS has a low Thursday of 25 below in Cedar Rapids and a high of 61 next Monday. Is it possible we could jump 86 degrees in just over 3 days? My take is...no. With a foot or more of snow in

THE ICE MAN COMETH....
I'm here...and what a pleasure it is to make your acquaintance! Sincerely, the ice man Fellow Americans, I've been telling you the deep freeze was coming and here it is. Intensely cold air has dropped temperatures into the rarified range of 20-30 below. Wind chills under 50 below are accompanying the cold and it's downright mean. Welcome to the Arctic "south"! Below, you can see the frigid air mass diving into the Midwest. Here's the upper level wind flow which is pushing the

GO BIG OR GO HOME....
The all-time record low in Cedar Rapids is 29 below set in 2009. There's no doubt here (and in many other parts of the Midwest) lows will be within striking distance of that benchmark. It's a dubious honor but in my opinion if we're going to be that cold (and we will), it might as well be 30 below so we can set the record and make history. Afterall, what's another degree or two when it's that cold? Trust me, you won't know the difference. One thing I do want to emphasize is h

SNOWFALL TOTALS...
Just wanted to give a quick updates after a winter storm moved through the Midwest Sunday night into Monday. Here's the regional perspective of snowfall totals: And a zoomed in look at my local area: Now cold air is surging southward. Temperatures will drop below zero across much of the Midwest this evening and may not rise above zero until Friday! Brutally cold air will move in - the coldest air on the planet will be centered on the Midwest! This will bring dangerous wind ch

SNOW FALLING AND BRUTAL COLD COMING...
A strong storm will move through eastern Iowa and bring snow and brutally cold air behind it. Snow could be heavy at times and the heaviest snow will be overnight Sunday into early Monday morning. There is good consistency on the track of this storm, the difference with some of the models is the intensity. That is leading to a difference in moisture and the amount of snow that will fall. Here's the 0z Euro: The Euro has come down a little southwest and has slightly higher moi
