SEVERE WEATHER LIKELY IN SPOTS TODAY...

Good day from Portland, Oregon. I'm in a short conference recess but wanted to pass along the late morning update from the Storm Prediction Center. It contains an enhanced risk of severe weather for later today and tonight across most of my area.

A slow moving cold front will enter the enhanced risk area late in the afternoon tapping a warm moist air mass. Sunshine ahead of the front will generate significant differential heating and instability will be sufficient for strong to severe storms. Wind and large hail are the primary concerns but an isolated tornado is not out of the question. Here's the mid-day hi-resolution satellite image.

Convection has already fired in parts of NC Iowa but it will likely remain below severe limits until much later in the day or evening, depending on your location.
