A LITTLE FLAKEY UP NORTH!

October 12, 2019

Jack frost paid a visit to to many Midwest homes early Saturday with lows at or below the freezing mark. It was 29 degrees here in Cedar Rapids, the first time this fall we've hit 32. The typical date is roughly October 10th so this was consistent with the average.

Here's some other readings around the Midwest at 6:00am Not lows just the hourly observations.

I'm now watching a piece of energy (what's known as vorticity) spin south around the upper air low in Minnesota. This will spread clouds and even some rain and snow showers southeast during the afternoon and evening. As you can see the clouds have already invaded northern Iowa. The far south will continue sunny much of the afternoon where temperatures will be much warmer in the 50s. It will be windy across the board.

Radar at 1:00pm shows some of the mixed precipitation getting into northern Iowa. Spencer, Estherville, and Mason City were all reporting light snow showers at 1:00.

Most of the mixed showers should stay along and north of the HWY 20 corridor as the afternoon and evening progresses. A few could sneak as far south as HWY 30. The 3k NAM shows this for coverage at 9:00pm this evening.

The model shows the potential for a few spots to get a dusting of snow, mainly on grassy and elevated surfaces in the north.

This won't amount to much but it is early for the first flakes even in my northern counties. I'm hoping this is a sign of good things to come this snow season. Let me know in the forum if you love snow and what your thoughts are for the winter ahead. Enjoy the rest of your Saturday and thanks for visiting TSwails.com! Roll weather...TS
