WHERE HAS SPRING GONE?...

We got an early taste of summer with a stretch of 80s, there's buds on the trees and flowers that have bloomed... but now we can't even get any spring temperatures to stick around. In fact... I saw flakes Saturday morning in Marion!

We'll wake up to sub-freezing temperatures on Sunday with some clear skies and light winds:

The afternoon won't be much better -- temperatures will be running 15 degrees below normal:

The clouds, the cool weather, and the periodic wintry precipitation is because of what's happening way above our heads:

There's a large low pressure system (trough) in the upper levels that's leading to the recent cooldown.

Temperatures are going to remain below normal into the new week, too. Here's a look at the 15-day temperature trend for Cedar Rapids:

And for the Quad Cities:

The rest of April will be rather chilly with the chance for spring and summer to appear once again in May, but we'll have to see how the trend holds.

During this stretch, the pattern will be rather dry. There's just a slim chance for a few showers early Tuesday morning of next week, but generally low precipitation totals:

The lack of rain would bode well for the high waters on the Mississippi - we'll talk more about that in my next post.
