STEVE'S "WILD" WORLD OF WEATHER...

When I'm wondering about weather folklore and historical events this is the man I go to. With more than 50 years of statistical and observational research, he's the dude! When it comes to lunar cycles, woolly bear caterpillars, insects, bugs, and animals, he tracks them, records them, and establishes ties to weather patterns. He's a knowledgeable and interesting man. His name is Steve Gottschalk by way of Lowden, Iowa. I'm grateful to him for lending his unique perspective to the site. Steve's "wild" world of weather can be found every week right here on TSwails.com. Take it away Steve! SOUTHERN TREND HOLDS...

Winter Storm Watches were put out and will likely be different by Monday morning. The storm has shifted to the southeast - a big jog from earlier trends that had been holding for several days. BUT the trend is your friend and the southern shift continues on the models as of Sunday evening. Now, there will likely be some changes still as the storm comes together, but this is what we have to work with right now. This is a look at the storm Monday through Thursday morning... quite the difference from what we were looking at just last night. The storm is displaced further south and east. Basically this is an issue of phasing - two storms (low pressure systems) coming together to produce one, str

UPDATE...THE NEW EURO, THE MAKINGS OF A MESS

While it is very early and much can change, the trend in models is to develop what could be a significant snow system in the central Midwest next Monday night that could perhaps last into Tuesday night....the potential is there for a fairly long duration event. I do think the models are on the right track with a storm but they have had their share of problems with phasing this winter. I want to stress we are in the preliminary stages where large variances in track are possible from run to run. These can really alter the location of the heavier snow. What I'm looking for going forward is consistency in amounts, track, position, and timing. Due to the potential scope of the system I just wante

SOME SPRING IN THAT STEP

Thursday morning the mercury went into the tank once again with Oelwein dropping to a low of -9. The zero line ran from about Cedar Rapids northeast to Dubuque. With any luck that will be the last sub-zero lows of the winter. I doubt that will be the case but I can honestly say it gets tougher and tougher to get there with each passing day. The short term focus now centers on warmer temperatures for the weekend. Winds are going to swing around to the south and in places where there is little to no snow on the ground temperatures will get a nice bounce. Here's the meteogram for Cedar Rapids Saturday through next Friday. This is a blend of multiple models...some higher and others lower. A few s
