HIGH WIND THREAT MONDAY...
Storms will move through the region Sunday night and will play a role in how Monday plays out. However, damaging winds appear likely somewhere in the region. The outlook for wind for Monday has elevated probabilities for damaging winds (as of 8 pm Sunday):
Take note of how large the area is of potentially destructive winds:
Let' talk about how we get here -- because there's still uncertainties about how this all evolves. Monday will be another hot and humid day.
Humidity - and therefore moisture levels - will be very high. That will, first, lead to heat index values of near and above 100 degrees:
There will be a lot of energy around, of course, due to the heat in place. Instability will be quite high:
There's also hot air above our heads, which can suppress thunderstorm activity so there's potential for storms to be held off, but it also makes it difficult to determine exactly where storms will fire. We know there will be a boundary in place along with abundant wind shear -
That means there's the potential for strong winds of 60 to 80 mph, but also large hail and embedded tornadoes. The winds could be an issue and there's the potential for storms to be long-lived, but there's still a lot of uncertainty in how exactly everything evolves.
Here's a look at how the HRRR is depicting storms around 5 pm Monday:
