SNOW TO GLANCE SOUTH, COLD DIGS IN
The northwest fringe of a major winter storm is set to clip my southern counties later today and tonight. 1-2 inch totals are expected in SE Iowa into WC Illinois. Due to the fact this will be a fluffy light but steady snow, falling on cold surfaces, it should not cause major problems locally. That said, roads will become slick and some extra time and caution will be necessary for travelers. However, if you are making a trip further east or south, be advised winter storm warnings are in effect and travel will be significantly impacted from the Ohio Valley into the Northeast. No issues are expected NW of the Quad Cities. Look at the vast extent of winter storm warnings for snow and ice just to the southeast.

The GOES Satellite image early Saturday afternoon shows the immense amount of moisture flowing into the system from the Pacific Ocean and Gulf of Mexico, all headed for the eastern half of the nation.

The composite radar indicates an expanding area of heavy snow spreading into Missouri and southern Illinois. Lighter snow on the NW fringe of the snow shield is set to graze southeast Iowa and WC Illinois later today and tonight.

The latest model guidance is in pretty good agreement now with a compromise between the EURO and GFS. The EURO is finally catching the extent of the cold dry air and has shifted further south. The GFS is a hair further north but not much. It has done a better job than the EURO of seeing the extent of the dry air and has consistently been further south with the snow shield locally. A tip of the hat to the GFS, for once! It now appears the 1/2 to 1 inch line should run from Washington, Iowa to the Quad Cities and on to Sterling, Illinois. Very little snow if any will be found NW of there. The far south around Keokuk, Ft. Madison, and points east could see up to 2 inches. About 1.5" around Burlington.

I like what the NWS is showing in its official forecast. It may be a bit heavy in the far south with a range up to 3 inches but overall it looks solid.

What snow falls should be over early Sunday, and then it's more cold, but quiet weather into next week. The EURO indicates highs Sunday that will hover near or slightly above zero.

Lows Monday morning of 5 to 10 below are expected.

Wind chills Monday morning of 20-25 below are widespread.

That's the latest and greatest as winter continues to tighten its grip. Roll weather, and please consider a donation to my fundraiser if you find value in the product. TSwails.com is a no pay site and I rely on your donations to fund expenses and the extensive time necessary to make it the best it can be. Roll weather...TS DONATE HERE
