A BRUSH WITH BERYL

The remnants of Beryl, (the earliest category 5 storm in history to form in the Atlantic basin), are now pushing northward into the lower Mississippi Valley. Despite being a shell of itself, the storm continues to dump excessive rain and gusty winds. By Monday evening, the storm was downgraded to a tropical depression with winds of 40 mph. This radar image from Monday afternoon shows intense rain rotating around the center of circulation north of Houston. Rainfall of 8–12 inches was common in the Houston metro. You can also see numerous tornado warnings on the NE side of the circulation.

The satellite animation also depicts clouds from the system lifting into SE Missouri and southern Illinois.

The remnants of the storm will cut through SE Illinois, passing close to Indianapolis. This may bring clouds and even a few lights showers to my far southern counties

The EURO shows the NW fringe of the rain shield just grazing far SE Iowa and WC Illinois Tuesday evening.

While most of us avoid rain Tuesday, clouds (thickest in the SE) will be in the increase early and should be around until late Tuesday night when the storm center gets into Indiana. That is shown nicely in this satellite animation off the EURO.

These are the projected rainfall totals from the EURO through Tuesday night. Some 2-3 inch amounts showing up in central Illinois. We definitely don't need or want that around here.

With passing clouds and NE winds, temperatures will remain a few degrees below normal in the upper 70s to low 80s.

UNSETTLED PATTERN CONTINUES...

Following the passage of Beryl, NW flow amplifies again. The end result is enough cool air aloft for what should mainly be diurnal showers and a few thunderstorms Wednesday through Sunday. As with recent rains, these are expected to be hit-and-miss. Additionally, moisture will decrease, which means generally brief and light showers can be expected, although here and there a couple heavier totals are possible where storm movement is slow in this stagnant pattern. This is what the EURO shows for rain totals Wednesday through Sunday night.

Taking a dive into the long range, both the GFS and EURO show at least a short period of time where the 500mb jet stream flattens and heights rise over the upper Midwest. The process is slow and really doesn't take hold until later next week. July 21st, the EURO looks like this with the westerlies cranking along the Canadian border.

Such a set-up aloft would favor most of the storminess over the northern tier and much of the nation would experience warm muggy conditions, typical of mid-July. Note the temperature departures shown at that time.

The Climate Prediction Center also indicates much of the nation in the summer doldrums, with the majority of the country seeing above normal temperatures.

Such a pattern also suggests diurnally driven instability precipitation with little organized forcing. What showers and storms do form, are likely to be widely scattered and while overall amounts should be near normal, some spots may actually see totals that are below normal.

One thing is for sure, no heat and humidity is in our immediate future. The EURO meteogram shows highs in the Quad Cities mainly in the 80-85 range until Sunday at the earliest. I'm "cool" with that!

Wave hi to the remnants of Beryl as the former hurricane passes harmlessly off to the SE Tuesday. Until next time, roll weather...TS

This place is so beautiful! Carolyn and Terry were so thoughtful and kind to let us have our wedding at the church. They even provided extra supplies in case we needed them. The private garden worked perfectly for our ceremony, and the backyard easily fit our reception needs. Not to mention, the balconies make perfect photo spots! My husband and I recommend the Little White Church and will be telling all our friends about it.
