A SCOOP OF FALL...

It won't last long, but the reality that fall is knocking on the door will be front and center Saturday morning. A nice big Canadian high situated over SC Canada has sent an early season reminder of what's ahead, with temperatures well into the 40s. As I write this the official lows have not been reached, but according to the 3k NAM this is what they should be close to early Saturday.

There should be just enough of a breeze to produce early morning wind chills in the mid to upper 30s north of I-80. Coat please.

With the core of the cold air overhead Friday afternoon, instability was enough to generate scattered showers. As expected, rainfall was light. One of the showers passed over my place around 1:00 p.m. mixing down some of the cool air aloft and producing winds I would estimate were near 40mph. Temperatures plunged about 7 degrees with a quick shot of rain that totaled .04 inches. 15 minutes later, the sun was out and readings were back up 6 degrees. A nice little hiccup! Overnight skies have cleared and going forward beautiful September weather is expected into next week. Temperatures will remain on the cool side Saturday thanks to the chilly start. Highs should still make it to the mid to upper 60s with just a scattering of fair weather cumulus clouds. Great football weather.

Sunday is even better, with highs cracking 70 under fair skies. All things considered, another outstanding weekend of weather here in the Midwest. After that, the upper air pattern at 500 becomes conducive for above normal temperatures in the 80s for what could be a 6 or 7 day stretch. Here's what the EURO suggests. I say yes to that.

Guidance also continues to point towards a dry period dominated by high pressure for at least the next 10 days. Here's what the EURO shows for rainfall departures through September 16th.

The GFS going out 6 more days shows this for 16 day rainfall departures. Considering how wet the spring and summer was, this is a significant turn around.

This is what the Climate Prediction Center indicates for temperatures and precipitation, which mirrors my thinking, mild and dry.

Well, as the saying goes there's no sense in beating a dead horse...or in the case dead weather. Not much to do but embrace our good fortune. Enjoy the weekend and roll weather...TS

What a gem! The Little White Church exceeded our expectations. It was the perfect spot to meet up with another couple to relax and explore nearby Galena. We enjoyed the beautiful great room with its fireplace and amazing views of the rolling countryside. (The photos simply can't do it justice).
