FINE AND DANDY...

Temperatures were a little frisky Sunday morning, with most locations reporting readings in the low 40s. These were the coldest minimums since late April. A few spots even had their first 30s of the season. The NWS in the Quad Cities dipped to 38 and was one of the region's cold spots. Here are some of the observed temperatures around daybreak Sunday.

By late afternoon, temperatures in all areas were back in the low to mid 70s. Thanks to high pressure, skies were clear across the upper Midwest. However, there was a layer of haze tied to forest fires in Canada. You can clearly see the smoke (slightly elevated above the surface) on the hi-resolution GOES 8 satellite imagery.

Going forward, the upper level winds will veer enough to diminish the smoke, setting the stage for a warming trend that brings summery conditions back into the central United States. Taking a look at the mean 500mb upper air pattern, the next 7 days are dominated by W/SW flow aloft.

Forcing for precipitation is minimal in my area, with cool air restricted to NW Canada and Alaska. Not only does that bring unseasonably warm temperatures, it means rainfall will be hard to come by through mid-September. Here are the rainfall departures indicated by the EURO and GFS over the next 2 weeks.

The GFS

The EURO

These are temperature departures depicted by the EURO the next 10 days.

That translates to temperatures in the 80s for the foreseeable future. The EURO meteogram even shows 9 consecutive days of 80 degree highs in the Quad Cities starting Tuesday.

The warm dry pattern shows up nicely in the 6-10 day outlook issued by the Weather Prediction Center. No doubt, our fall fling is over for now.

Looking even longer range, the EURO ensemble weeklies, which go out to October 24th, show the quiet trend continuing with 46 day rainfall departures that look like this. Much of the nation is below normal. Confidence at this range decreases, but the general idea holds merit as far as I'm concerned.

Overall, temperatures the next 46 days are likely to remain near to above normal, which means the snow season may get off to a slower than average start around the continental United States. This is what the weeklies show for total snowfall from now until October 24th.

With that, I will wrap this up and look forward to what should be another sensational late summer day. Take it in. Roll weather...TS

What a gem! The Little White Church exceeded our expectations. It was the perfect spot to meet up with another couple to relax and explore nearby Galena. We enjoyed the beautiful great room with its fireplace and amazing views of the rolling countryside. (The photos simply can't do it justice). The charming church/home was quiet, well appointed and clean. And Carolyn was proactive with instructions and a terrific communicator. We will definitely be back!

This place is so beautiful! Carolyn and Terry were so thoughtful and kind to let us have our wedding at the church. They even provided extra supplies in case we needed them. The private garden worked perfectly for our ceremony, and the backyard easily fit our reception needs. Not to mention, the balconies make perfect photo spots! My husband and I recommend the Little White Church and will be telling all our friends about it.
