WINTER STORM WARNINGS IN EFFECT

A major winter storm continues to grind its way across the Midwest, producing moderate to heavy snow and winter storm warnings that will remain in effect through tonight. Winds will remain moderate until midnight tonight when they will increase to 30mph, producing some blowing and drifting snow, especially in rural areas. Roads are snow covered and travel is hazardous and will remain so through much of today and tonight.

Here are some snowfall reports as of 9:30am Saturday.

The storms' energy remains back in Kansas, meaning at least another 12 hours of accumulating snow potential.

The initial surge of warm air advection has passed, and a new deformation band associated with the primary energy is developing in central Iowa that will move across the region this afternoon and evening. This is expected to enhance snowfall rates. As it stands now, the heavier snows for the remainder of the storm will be more concentrated on the northern half of my area (roughly I-80 north), where another 7–9 inches of snow is possible. My counties in far SE Iowa and WC Illinois will likely see an additional 3–5 inches

By the time the storm is complete, many areas should see final storm totals in the range of 9 to as much as 14 inches in some local spots.

This is what the high resolution HRRR shows for additional snowfall through late night.

Here's some additional models but amounts could be 1-2 inches less in spots since a bit of this has already fallen.

Needless to say, we have plenty of snow to go. A good day to hunker down, watch football, put up the Christmas tree, or dare I say, shovel snow! More to come later this afternoon. Roll weather...TS
