JUST A BIT MORE THAN NIPPY...

For some, last night was the coldest night of the winter so far, with low temperatures crashing to 23 below in Fayette, Iowa (typically a cold spot).

Locally, here are some of the lows reported to the NWS from eastern Iowa and northern Illinois.

Wind chills from Waterloo, to Independence and on to Dubuque did fall into the range of 34-38 below.

These are some of the coldest lows and wind chills reported to the NWS in the Quad Cities.

After sunset, temperatures will see a quick drop off this evening and then level off some as the core of the coldest air shifts off to the southeast. However, lows will still fall into the category of 5-10 below zero. There will be enough of a breeze for wind chills of 20-25 below. The dangerous cold has prompted the NWS to issue a COLD WEATHER ADVISORY. Dress properly if you are going to be out for any extended period of time.

The frigid weather will last through Thursday and then begin to moderate. Both the EURO and GFS indicate highs above freezing Sunday rising to the mid to upper 40s Monday and Tuesday. A 50 is possible in the south if most of the snow is melted come Tuesday. The EURO shows this.

More on the thaw and precipitation chances in my next post. Roll weather, and if you can spare a donation, I will see to it that it's money well spent....TS
